Books for Children
Have you wondered where all the breastfeeding, cosleeping, babywearing children are in children's books?! We hope you will find some here that become family favourites for all ages.
The Biggest Bed in the World by Lindsay Camp - a fun story about a dad who has to build a huge bed to accomodate the many cosleeping children in the family until one night the bed starts to move! Suggested age 3-7 years.
We Like to Nurse by Chia Martin - a beautiful book showing pictures of mammals, including humans, nursing their young with simple text explaining each picture.
On Mother's Lap by Ann Herbert Scott - a story about a young bot in the Arctic who discovers that his mother's lap has room for everyone. Many parents find this a helpful book for explaining sharing and infinite love when another sibling comes along.
A Pebble For Your Pocket by Thich Nhat Hanh - described as life-enhancing by parents, this book skillfully conveys sophisticated Buddhist thinking into simple and fascinating ideas and is a super book for suggesting the art of mindfulness to children who are beginning to question their world and their place in it.
What Baby Needs by William & Martha Sears - just as the title says, this book helps children understand everything a younger sibling will need and includes breastfeeding, cosleeping and affection in a wonderfully positive way. There are little sections called 'What About Me' for helping the older sibling understand their needs too.
A Ride on Mother's Back: A Day of Baby Carrying Around the World by Emery Bernhard - a lovely book with images showing various babywearing styles, techniques and slings from around the world with breastfeeding and affection seamlessly woven into the theme of the book.
Henry Hikes to Fitchburg by Donald B. Johnson - a story of two bears who hike to Fitchburg taking vastly different routes with the lesson being that taking ones time and appreciating nature along the way is a precious experience.
The Cuddlers by Stacy Towle Morgan & Marvin Jarboe - published by la Leche League International this story recounts a night when the family go to sleep in separate beds but awake all cuddled up together. A wonderful book advocating innocent intimacy within the family bed.
A Kiss for Little Bear by Else Holmelund Minarik - a fun, jolly tale of a Bear's message which gets amusing lost on translation. Lovely illustrations and plenty of love, warmth and affection.
